After outreach to several historical organization contacts and carefully considering safety and cost factors, Great Parks deconstructed and removed the log cabin located at Shawnee Lookout. Great Parks worked with Easterseals Redwood’s Building Value reuse store to deconstruct the log cabin and repurpose the materials for sale to support their social enterprise. Work on this project completed in late summer 2024.
Shawnee Lookout is located within the Shawnee Lookout Archaeological District, a historic district containing many historic settlement sites. Great Parks will continue to develop historically oriented programming around this site. The Ohio State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) reviewed the project and found there is no effect on historic resources as a result of this project.
The log cabin was built in the late 1700s to early 1800s and was originally in Elizabethtown, Ohio until 1971, when it came into the possession of Great Parks, which relocated it to Shawnee Lookout. The 18th-century Springhouse School will remain in its current location at Shawnee Lookout and continue to be featured in programming.
