University of the Great Outdoors

The University of the Great Outdoors (UGO) is a new initiative by the Hamilton County Park District Naturalist Department to encourage health and nature appreciation in the Great Outdoors. Throughout the year, UGO programs will be offered at various parks with an emphasis on outdoor exercise and nutrition. The programs are designed to be fun and educational! Experience recreation in nature!

JULY 23
Night Bike / 8:30 p.m.
Miami Whitewater Forest
Enjoy a late evening bicycle ride then have some refreshments by a fire.  You may choose to ride the 7.8 mile loop once or twice. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Helmets are suggested. Cost is $5 and the deadline to register is July 21. Register online.

JULY 25
Outdoor Archery II / 2:00 p.m.
Winton Woods
This program is for those who have taken our Outdoor Archery program and want to learn some fun games to improve your shot. Adults must remain with children under 18. Cost is $15 and the deadline to register is July 23. Register online.

JULY 28
Archery Practice / 6:00 p.m.
Winton Woods
Receive brief instruction on the use of a compound bow from a certified archery instructor and practice on our outdoor archery range! Archers must be able to pull a minimum of ten pounds draw weight. Recommend ages eight to adult. Cost is $15 and the deadline to register is July 26. Register online.

JULY 31
Glow Disc Golf / 9:00 p.m.
Winton Woods
A game of disc or Frisbee golf is always fun, but playing it at night is even more fun! Bring your own glow disc/Frisbee or rent one of ours and try your skill on our glowing course!  Cost is $5, plus $3 for disc rental. Deadline to register is July 29. Register online.

AUGUST 6
Friday Night Float / 8:00 p.m.
Winton Woods
Enjoy a relaxing canoe outing on early summer evening. Get some pointers on canoeing, learn a little natural history of the lake then head out to enjoy the sunset. End the evening with some light refreshments. Participants must fit properly in provided personal floatation devices. Recommended for ages eight and up. Children must be accompanied by adult on the water. Cost is $10 and the deadline to register is August 4. Register online.

AUGUST 7
The Amazing Summer Scavenging Race / 2:00 p.m.
Winton Woods Parcours Trail
Gather your family or a team of thrill seekers and come venture along this course of nature knowledge and fast action. This is a popular race with prizes to boot. Physical exercise is one free benefit from this natural event.

AUGUST 14
Dusk Hike / 8:00 p.m.
Winton Woods Kingfisher Trail
Avoid the heat of summer with an evening hike. We will watch the sunset while we walk.  It is also a great time to see animals at dusk.

AUGUST 15
Outdoor Archery I / 2:00 p.m.
Winton Woods
A certified archery instructor will teach you the basics of shooting a compound bow on our outdoor range. Then try out your new archery skills with a little target practice! Archers must be able to pull a minimum of ten pounds draw weight. Recommend ages eight to adult. Cost is $15 and the deadline to register is August 13. Register online.

AUGUST 17

Summer Games / 11:00 a.m.
Sharon Woods Sharon Centre
Be a summer lawn game gold medalist! Test your skills with these fun and challenging outdoor games for everyone. Activities will be set up for two hours.

AUGUST 20
Full Moon Bike / 8:00 p.m.
Miami Whitewater Forest
Enjoy a late evening bicycle ride by the light of a nearly full moon and then have some refreshments by a fire. You may choose to ride the 7.8 mile loop once or twice. Recommended for ages 10 and up. Helmets are suggested. Cost is $5 and the deadline to register is August 18. Register online.

AUGUST 24

Winton Woods Kingfisher Trail
Avoid the heat of summer with an evening hike. We will watch the full moon rise as the sun is setting while we walk.  It is also a great time to see those animals of the dusk.
