Since 1930, Great Parks of Hamilton County has been Southwest Ohio’s regional leader in conservation, trail development and nature-based experiences. Protecting more than 18,000 acres of open space, Great Parks safeguards the region’s natural resources and preserves its native biodiversity. Through thoughtful stewardship, Great Parks pairs its conservation work with a broad range of outdoor activities, ensuring its greenspaces remain accessible to the public. With extensive trails, expansive waterways and year-round programs and special events for all ages, Great Parks removes barriers to the natural world and inspires exploration.
Great Parks was established in accordance with the Ohio Park District Law, adopted by the state General Assembly in 1917. This legislation, enabling the creation of county-wide park districts, is found in the Ohio Revised Code, Chapter 1545. Great Parks is a political subdivision of the State of Ohio, governed by a Board of Park Commissioners. Five board members are appointed by the Hamilton County Probate Court Judge, the Honorable Ralph Winkler, and serve for three-year terms. The Board sets governance policies, approves land acquisitions and annual budgets. The Board also appoints a Chief Executive Officer who is responsible for implementing park policies and leading the overall operation of Great Parks.
